Five Easy to do Home Health Checks

We often avoid visits to the doctor, deeming them unnecessary. This is most common in the 30+ years segment, who think they are fit and healthy and do not need tests. However, this is the age where one must start observing changes in the body. It is these changes that will determine your future health and wellbeing.

Measuring your waist: Stand before a mirror and circle your waist with a measuring tape. Slowly move the tape downwards until it rests on your hip bones. Take this measurement. A reading of 37 inches or more in men indicates increasing risk for diabetes and heart disease. 32 inches is the danger threshold for women and 35 inches indicates high risk. If you fall in the risk segment, the best way out is regular exercise. Also a healthy diet rich in salads and fruits can prove beneficial.

Listening to your heart: Place a finger on your wrist or back of your neck to find your pulse. Then tap your toes to the tone of your heart beat. This way you can note irregular heart beats. Experts note that irregular heart beats are often the early indicator of strokes. If you note such irregularities, it could be time to get your heart’s health tested.

Checking your depression levels: Checking the level of your depression is an important health check in today’s times. Ask yourself if you have been feeling down during the past month. Also ask yourself if you have lost pleasure in doing things over this period of time. If you answered yes, then probably you could consult your doctor. Reading motivating literature and pursuing an interesting hobby can also help you out of the rut.

Checking for deficiencies: Stick out of your tongue and look at it in the mirror. Is it bright red or pink? Is it rough or smooth? If your tongue feels smooth then you may be lacking in useful nutrients like folic acid and vitamin B12. A smooth red tongue may indicate anemia, a signal that you should improve your diet to include more greens and beet.

Lumps, lumps, lumps: Finally, I place this last as most important. Constantly check your body for lumps, especially in the breast tissue. With unhealthy lifestyles and growing cases of cancers, checking yourself early can be a lifesaver. Cancers determined later in high stages are difficult to cure.

Check for other unusual changes in your body and that of your loved ones. If you notice any changes, however embarrassing discuss them with your doctor. Understanding your body’s rhythm and making rhyme of it can help save lives.

Home health aides are in such high demand today, home health aide training programs can hardly keep up. Unlike many other career fields that have experienced a decline in job growth, job growth in the home health aide industry is expected to grow by more than 50% by 2018. This means, individuals that would like to break into this industry will have their pick of more than 230,000 job openings each year. By 2018, the workforce will increase from around 800,000 workers to nearly 1.2 million.

So why the huge increase in job growth over the next 8 years? For starters, America’s elderly population is growing at a rapid pace. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world’s 65-over population is growing at a rate of more than 800,000 per month. Many of these individuals are living healthier lives, so they mostly need basic care in the home. In addition, America’s physically and mentally disabled population is expected to grow in the coming years. This will create a demand for skilled workers that specialize in this area.

Home health aide careers offer little room for growth but they can help prepare workers for a career in other areas of health care such as nursing, physical therapy, and other related areas. As a result, job growth in this field will also occur as workers advance to other positions. Job growth will occur as a result of retirement or as workers leave the field for other reasons.

In addition to job growth and experience, home health aides earn a competitive salary. According to Collegedegreereport.com, home health care aides’ salaries start out on the low end, but the salary increases with experience. The figures are as follows: entry-level personal & home care aides earn a starting salary of ,590 per year, but the average salary is ,180. Top earners make anywhere from ,200-,120 per year.

If you’re considering a career as a home health aide, you should consider enrolling in a home health care program at a community college or vocational school or through an elder care program or home health care agency. In addition to a formal training program, certification is plus. Certification for home health aides is offered through The National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC).

To obtain certification, you must complete 75 hours of coursework in the following areas: providing home care, theories of basic human needs, food and nutrition, safety and prevention of injury, personal care, care of home and personal belongings, diversity, caregiver observation, family spending and budgeting, confidentiality, aging, working with children, working with the mentally ill, and working with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.

home health question by roygiggle: How do I start a home health care agency?
I am currently in school for nursing, my dream is to eventually open a home health care agency and educate people with no skills , but have an intrest in nursing assisting. I plan on being a Lpn for a while. But how can I use my experience to help me with starting a staffing agency.

home health best answer:

Answer by rickey p
You must target a place where there is a high number of seniors. Checking the census may help you in this matter. Ideally, you must target large cities. In order to legally operate, you must get a license from the state for you home health care agency. At start, you may hire workers with low salary to manage expenditure. It is advisable to do a background check before you hire them.Take up private medical insurance. This will assure your agency is able to meet with individual insurer necessities.

Better Than Neutrogena, December 28, 2010

This review is from: Home Health – Psoriasis Medicated Scalp & Body Wash, 8 fl oz liquid (Misc.)

I have used the Neutrogena T/Sal shampoo and disagree with the other reviewer that it is better. While T/Sal has a higher acid content of 3% compared to Homehealth’s 2%, I found that the Homehealth shampoo works better, perhaps it is the other natural ingredients in Homehealth such as Allantoin, Aloe Vera Gel, Carrot Oil, Echinacea Extract, Extracts of chamomile, comfrey, henna, hops, horsetail and nettle, compared with T/Sal’s only chemical ingredients. If I have a really bad flare-up I just leave the Homehealth shampoo on my scalp for several minutes, then wash out and this clears it up to great relief. I am only giving it 4 stars because I would prefer they offer a non-sulfate option although sulfates are included in T/Sal and majority of shampoos/soaps.

Scalp psoriasis worries solved!, February 10, 2010
    By
chikfender (GLENDALE, AZ United States) –

I love this product. After trying numerous over the counter, prescription, and special order products for my psoriasis of the scalp, I was so relieved finding this one. Those other products smelled, stained my hair, were really expensive, and usually had really toxic chemicals in them (like coal tar).

This natural formula is really great, smells pleasant but not strong, does not stain my hair, and is affordable. I have long hair and use it about twice per week in addition to my regular shampoo/conditioner regimen. I often give a bottle to people I know with dry scalp and they get hooked on it too. I think many people don’t realize that they have psoriasis. I LOVE this!

I have had itchy skin for years (thyroid disorder and eczema). I love this product. It is the only thing that keeps me from itching. I use it all winter and switch to a moisturizing regular soap in the summer when I am less dry. I usually only use it on my body, but if my scalp gets dry, I can use it just once every week or two to stop the itch.
