Sleep Disorders: Insomnia:Symptoms,Diagnosis and Cures

Insomnia is defined as the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. For millions of Americans, having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep is a nightly occurrence that causes daytime drowsiness, fatigue, irritability, inability to maintain focus and changes in mood or behavior. According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly one third of adult American’s suffer from symptoms of acute insomnia (symptoms that last less than three weeks) with 10% to 15% reporting episodes of chronic insomnia lasting for months or years. The underlying cause of insomnia varies. Solving the riddle of insomnia and finding a cure for insomnia symptoms involves repeated attempts to eliminate root causes for this sleep disorder in order to get a better night’s sleep.

Causes of Insomnia
Unlike other types of sleeping disorders, insomnia rarely has an organic cause, although it may accompany other physical disorders like fibromyalgia and chronic pain or psychological disorders like depression and anxiety. Most often, causes of insomnia result from lifestyle or situational stress and the consumption of alcohol or caffeine. In some cases insomnia is the simple reaction to prescription medication or over-the-counter remedies for other disorders.

Insomnia May Cause Sleep Deprivation
Untreated insomnia may lead to sleep deprivation as the result of sleep disturbances and lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation symptoms include both physical and psychological difficulties that impair the ability to function in every day life. When deprived of adequate sleep, the brain is no longer able to function properly. It impairs the brain’s ability to think clearly, handle stress and regulate emotions. Physical symptoms include heart disease, hypertension, delayed reaction time and may trigger slurred speech and tremors.

Getting a Diagnosis for Insomnia
Diagnosis of this common sleeping disorder is necessary to eliminate other sleeping disorders that may present with similar symptoms, causing sleep disturbances that may mimic the symptoms of insomnia. Sleep apnea is often confused with insomnia as it interrupts sleep and causes wakefulness during the night in response to a lack of oxygen when you temporarily stop breathing for short periods in your sleep. (For more detailed information about sleep apnea, see Sleeping Disorders: Sleep Apnea Symptoms here.)

Sleep Doctors
A doctor’s visit is in order to diagnose sleep disorders that last more than a few days or weeks without a known cause. Keep a journal of sleeping patterns, bouts of wakefulness, and sleep disturbances. Include activities you participated in on the day prior to your sleeping difficulties, paying close attention to evening or late afternoon activities. Note foods and beverages consumed throughout the day, particularly alcohol, caffeine and other stimulants. List all medications (both prescription and over the counter) as these may be contributing to your inability to get a good night’s sleep and are vital for a sleep disorder diagnosis. Your doctor will likely provide you with recommendations for improving sleep and may suggest natural sleep aids to induce or maintain sleep. In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe sleep aids to help you fall asleep and stay asleep or he may refer you to a sleep doctor for sleep disorder tests to determine the nature of your sleep disorder.

Eliminate Common Causes of Sleep Disturbances that Lead to Insomnia
Before resorting to sleeping aids, eliminate known causes of sleep difficulties. Changes to the physical environment may be necessary to get a better night’s sleep and ward off the symptoms of insomnia.

Block Light to Alleviate Symptoms of Insomnia
Light blocking shades to block out outside light from street lights, closing the bedroom door to eliminate light from other areas of the house or wearing eye masks if you work shift work and must sleep during daylight hours may be all that is needed to induce and maintain sleep.

Block Sound to Maintain Sleep
A white noise machine or clean air machine provides noise-blocking sound to filter out the sounds of traffic or a busy household that may be causing your bouts of insomnia. For some, earplugs are an alternative. Heavy drapes help block out the sounds from traffic or pedestrians near your home.

Create a Peaceful Atmosphere to Induce Sleep and Prevent Insomnia
Keep your bedroom free of outside distractions that may contribute to sleeping difficulties. Remove the TV, computers or any connections with work. Your bedroom should be a safe harbor away from the stress and demands of the world. Comfortable bedding, soft colors and a lavender sachet work to relax the body allowing you to drift off to sleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Lifestyle Changes May be Necessary to Prevent Sleep Disorders and Alleviate Insomnia
Your lifestyle choices may be the root cause of your sleeping difficulties. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the afternoon and evening. Exercise 20 to 30 minutes day at least 6 hours before bedtime. Avoid large meals in the evening and develop a good bedtime routine that relaxes the body and mind. A hot shower, bubble bath or other relaxing activity like reading or listening to soft music sets the stage for sleep. Maintain a regular sleep schedule going to bed and arising at the same time everyday.

Eliminate stress. Although stress is a natural by product of our hurried lives, eliminating or avoiding stressful situations improves sleep and decreases the incidence of insomnia. Learn to complete necessary tasks on time, avoid people and situations that create stress, and let things go at the end of the day. Learn to say no and resist the urge to commit to projects or causes that really are not important to you or your life. Concentrate your energies on those things that really matter. Let someone else bake the cookies for that bake sale and get some sleep. With a good night’s rest, you will be better able to cope with the demands of a busy life

Natural Sleep Aids
The use of over the counter or natural sleep aids like melatonin, valerian or kava may be an option if changes to lifestyle and physical environment are unsuccessful, but herbal remedies for insomnia should be approached with caution. Occasional use poses little risk, but prolonged use may cause serious health problems. Seek the advice of your doctor before beginning any herbal treatment for insomnia or other sleeping disorders to be sure it will not interact with your regular medications or contribute to any underlying conditions.

Occasional bouts of insomnia as a result of stress or lifestyle choices affect nearly everyone at some time in their lives. Simple home treatments generally provide relief and restore healthy sleeping habits. When sleeping problems persist despite your efforts to change your lifestyle and alter your environment, do not suffer with insomnia in silence. Seek the help and guidance of your physician to diagnose and treat insomnia and restore healthy sleep habits.

Aids To Sleep question by derelicte: Do sleep aids replenish your body the way REM sleep does, because i learned they make you skip REM?
In school, i learned that sleep aids made you skip REM sleep, so it would have been better to go with alternative less medicated methods to sleep. I’ve heard people though say that, on sleep aids they wake up replenished just the same as if they had their REM sleep. So was the information outdate, or possibly something overlooked?

Aids To Sleep best answer:

Answer by Interfer0
It depends on the sleep aid. I prefer Valerian root pills. They are a natural supplement, and they put me into a deep deep REM. I also don’t wake up all groggy, but it is harder to pull me out of sleep. I can’t wake up to an alarm. They give you extremely vivid dreams they are really neat.

I used to have a very random schedule that caused me to have trouble sleeping. I originally bought these hoping that they would help me fall asleep quickly, especially in situations where I wasn’t super tired, but still wanted to get a full 8 hours of sleep.

Unfortunately, for me at least, these don’t really cause me to fall asleep much faster. What they do is keep me from getting up after four hours and not being able to go back to sleep. If I take these, I end up sleeping for at least 8 hours, and still feeling like I could go back to bed.

Now I only use these if I’m trying to get back to a normal sleep schedule by going to bed early and getting a full nights sleep. They work well for that, but I have to make sure I’m going to be able to sleep the full night, because I’ll be zonked out otherwise.

To help me sleep, I’ve taken these 10 or 12 times and have also take Ambien on occasion . I’ve found these to be quite potent, to the point to where you are a bit groggy when it is time to get up the next morning. I can feel the morning-after effect even after taking only half of one.

They don’t take effect quite as fast as Ambien; it takes about an hour for them to kick in, but once they do they put me in a fairly long-lasting, deep sleep that is not so easy to shake out of when it is time to get up. For me, they have much more of an after effect than Ambien…they’re much more “druggy,” for lack of a better term. I was surprised an over-the-counter sleep aid would have this much of a kick to it.

One point to note: if you are a male and tend to have to get up in the middle of the night, these pills can…well…enlarge that problem. If you normally get up once or twice, it is likely that you will get up three or for times after taking one of these. You’ll get up more sleepily and will go back to sleep more easily when you go back to bed, but be aware that it may have an impact in that regard. It provides a warning to this effect on the label.

Overall, though, I have found them to be a fairly effective OTC solution to battle insomnia.

This review is from: Kirkland Signature Nighttime Sleep Aid (Doxylamine Succinate 25 mg), 96-Count Tablets (Pack of 2) (Health and Beauty)

Doxylamine tablets in the drug store are almost always packaged on a plastic bubble card. That means a nightly ordeal to get at the little pill, which is usually crushed to bits in the struggle. But this product has the same pills in a convenient little bottle.

Doxylamine is a safe, effective anti-histamine sleep aid. I find it to be less drying to the eyes than Benadryl, and as sleep-inducing as zolpidem but with fewer side effects.
